We suggest that the emerging field of the conservation humanities can play a valuable role in biodiversity protection in Papua New Guinea (PNG), where most land remains under collective customary clan ownership. As a first step to mobilising this scholarly field in PNG and to support capacity development for PNG humanities academics, we conducted a landscape review of PNG humanities teaching and research relating to biodiversity conservation and customary land rights. We conducted a systematic literature review, a PNG teaching programme (...) review, and a series of online workshops between the authors (10 PNG-based, 7 UK-based). We found a small but notable amount of PNG research and teaching focused on biodiversity conservation or customary land rights. This included explicit discussion of these topics in 8 of 156 PNG-authored humanities texts published 2010-2020 and related teaching content in the curricula of several different humanities-based programmes. We discuss current barriers to PNG academic development. The growth of fully fledged in-country conservation humanities will require a joint collaborative effort by PNG researchers, who are best placed to carry out such work, and researchers from abroad who can access resources to support the process. FaraoneEarly in the homeric Hymn to Demeter, the disguised goddess, when offered employment as a nurse for a young child, responds with the following boast about her knowledge of protective magic (lines 227-30):1228 M: Ignarra, DelatteI will nurse him, and I do not expect—through any weak-mindedness of his nurse—that witchcraft or an (...) "undercutter" will harm him, for I know an antidote far stronger than a "woodcutter" and I know an excellent defense against woeful witchcraft.Scholars have long noted that in her boast the goddess seems to imitate a magical charm. Richardson (1974) points out, for instance, the peculiar "incantatory" character of these verses, signaled by such devices as the repetition of words and sounds, chiasmus, and the anaphora of oida—a word that elsewhere in epic is limited to special kinds of song, for example, that of the Muses (Th. 27-28) or the Sirens (Od. 12. 189-91). In addition [End Page 1] to these general features, Paul Maas showed more than fifty years ago that the second line of Demeter's boast is quite similar in structure to the penultimate line of a hexametrical incantation inscribed on a late fourth-or early third-century B.C.E. lead amulet from Phalasarna, Crete:2shall not harm me with ointment or with application or with drink or with incantation.The striking similarities in content (both texts are concerned with protective magic) and form (the identical placement of the words... in a single hexametrical verse) can hardly be coincidental, and, although one can never rule out the possibility that the amulet may be quoting or adapting the language of the hymn, it seems much more likely that Maas is correct in thinking that both depend on an even earlier hexametrical charm.3There is general agreement, then, that Demeter's boast reflects or mimics a protective incantation in both its form and content. There is also a wide consensus that: (1) the words hupotamnon and hulotomos, closely conjoined by chiasmus (), must have similar meanings; and (2) they both refer to agents who "cut the "4 or "cut under" something.5 There has, however, [End Page 2] been a notable lack of agreement on who or what precisely the "undercutter" and the "woodcutter" are. Nearly a century ago T. W. Allen, marshaling a number of cross-cultural parallels, suggested that both were euphemistic names for the worms blamed for toothaches in adults and for teething pains in children.6 In recent years, however, Allen's interpretation has generally been supplanted by Richardson's suggestion (1974, 230) that the terms antitomon, hupotamnon, and hulotomos "must all refer to the same thing, namely the cutting of herbs for magical purposes" and that both hupotamnon and hulotomos probably designate a human agent versed in this special art. Thus he translates line 229 as "I know an antidote more powerful than the herb-cutter, " a rather terse formulation that presumably should be expanded as follows: "I know an antidote more powerful than (the poison that) the herb-cutter (knows)." According to Richardson's reading, then, both "undercutter" and "woodcutter" refer to human agents who may try to poison the baby with noxious herbs, and Demeter's boast contrasts the superior (defensive) herbal lore of wet nurses to that of professional herbalists, who are in fact regularly called root cutters (rhizotomoi). This interpretation is quite reasonable, and in recent years it seems to have ousted Allen's in subsequent editions and translations.7 This judgment may, however, be premature: some recently discovered or reedited magical texts suggest that names ending in - were also used regularly to describe harmful gods or demons who were thought to cause pain by cutting into the human body. Gibson points out that Demosthenes was widely read in later antiquity, and this created the need for linguistic and historical commentaries (...) on his speeches. Of these, some have partially survived on papyrus, while excerpts have also been preserved in later lexicographers and the Byzantine scholia found in the margins of Demosthenic manuscripts. The purpose of Gibson's study is to clarify some confusing and difficult issues related to the ancient scholarship on Demosthenes and to provide the text and commentary on the main sources. [End Page 481]Gibson's introduction includes an informative outline of key parameters in the debate, such as the accuracy of excerption from an ancient commentary, the significance of date and place, and the intended readership of these commentaries. The first chapter discusses the form and transmission of ancient commentaries, their relation with lexicographic works, and their impact on the Byzantine scholia. Gibson convincingly argues that the scholia do not reveal direct dependency upon the surviving ancient commentaries but were compiled from lexicographic works such as Harpocration or the Suda, and possibly other works lost for us. The second chapter deals with the sources, critical agenda, and readership of the ancient commentaries. Here, Gibson provides a clear account of the purposes and guiding principles behind the composition of these works. He concludes that ancient commentators were familiar with interpretative problems of the Demosthenic text and tried to explain allusions and references to specific events, people, and places and also provide semantic, etymological and textual explanations of difficult or unusual terms. In this and the third chapter, Gibson discusses in considerable detail the scholarship on Didymus. He rejects the view that Didymus was merely a filter for a "golden era" of Alexandrian scholarship and argues that his prominent position as a commentator is due to the vast quantity of his work and its impact on later scholars. In sum, the first part of the study offers an informative account of ancient Demosthenic scholarship written in a clear and accessible style.The second part of the book contains the texts of ancient commentators of Demosthenes, with English translations, and also linguistic and historical commentary. In the translation, Gibson chooses to leave out many lines from the papyrus texts where only single words or fragments of words are legible; he translates only the most extant sections of the text. This is a valid choice, but readers should be aware of the fact that many important details may be hiding in the leftovers and fragments that have been omitted. Gibson does not provide the readily available text of P.Berol.inv. 9780, the most extensive surviving work of Didymus, while he cites the rest of the texts from reliable modern editions. In the commentary there are interesting discussions on the Spartan mora, the building of the Parthenon, the Helliastic courts, and many other topics noted by the ancient commentators on Demosthenes. An appendix presents and discusses P.Lond.Lit. 179, a prologue and commentary on Dem. 21. The reader will probably find useful the indexes and rich bibliography provided in the last part of this study.Gibson's commentary is certainly thorough but contains a number of errors in detail, and important bibliography is missing on individual topics. Heinrich Heine had not only many places of residence during his years in Germany, but he also made numerous journeys throughout Europe. Thus, during his time in France, he got to know the country substantially better and furthermore he would have liked to undertake a detour to Spain. Since his student days, Spain was for him as a German Jew the epitome of a Jewish- Christian-Islamic symbiosis despite many differences and difficulties. Heine admired the great Jewish achievements and remained critical of Christian claims, although he had become a Protestant after being baptized at the end of his law studies. His tragedy Almansor, poems from the Buch der Lieder, texts in prose and epic poems from the Parisian years as well as in his literary bequest and above all the last collection of poems called Romanzero with their moving “Spanish” texts, namely the stories about Jews, Christians and Muslims, are the most important poetic evidences of religious coexistence and its problems.
